PRINCE2 concepts
Use structured governance while tailoring the approach to the project.
The idea
PRINCE2 is a structured project-management method emphasizing justified delivery, defined responsibilities, controlled stages, and tailoring. It is useful to understand its governance ideas without assuming every project needs maximum documentation. Editions and terminology evolve, so use the applicable official method for certification or detailed implementation. Security projects still need technical expertise and evidence of outcomes alongside management controls.
In practice
A major access-platform change uses stage decisions and explicit ownership while keeping working documents proportional to its size and uncertainty.
A common misunderstanding
A method name does not guarantee delivery quality. The team must still understand dependencies, risks, and the actual acceptance criteria.

Why tailor a structured method?
Think it through: Different projects need different levels of control, documentation, and decision frequency.
Use structure to maintain a business reason
PRINCE2 is a structured project-management method associated with continued business justification, defined responsibilities, staged control, and tailoring to the project. Terminology and detailed requirements vary across editions, so use the edition adopted by the organization when applying it formally. A short overview should not be treated as a substitute for the official method or certification material.
For a cybersecurity project, a continuing business case connects the proposed investment to an organizational need. If the environment changes, leadership should reconsider whether the original approach remains worthwhile. Continuing only because money has already been spent can deepen a poor decision. Staged review points provide opportunities to reassess evidence and authorize the next commitment.
A fictional platform replacement
A team begins replacing a monitoring platform because the existing service lacks needed visibility. During a pilot, it learns that a newly supported integration can close much of the gap at lower operational cost. The project should evaluate that information against its business purpose rather than assume replacement remains the only acceptable result.
Clear responsibilities help separate delivery recommendations from authorization. Engineers can evaluate technical options, the project lead can explain the effect on plans, and the appropriate decision makers can decide whether to continue or redirect. Tailoring means applying proportionate controls, not using the method's name while omitting accountability.
Practice a stage decision
For a fictional identity migration pilot, describe the evidence leadership needs before funding broad rollout: demonstrated behavior, remaining risks, realistic cost, and operational readiness. Add one circumstance that would make stopping or changing direction sensible. This exercise focuses on reasoned authorization rather than memorizing management terminology without understanding what decision it supports.
