Exfiltration Over C2 Channel
Exfiltration over a command channel sends collected data through the same communications used for remote control.
What it means
Exfiltration over a command channel sends collected data through the same communications used for remote control. The channel's familiar pattern may conceal a change in purpose.
An investigation example
A known suspicious beacon begins sending substantially larger payloads after local document staging activity.
Evidence to examine
Correlate collection times, process ownership, channel behavior, and cumulative outgoing bytes.
A common analytical pitfall
A larger message is not enough to identify its contents; distinguish observed transfer from confirmed sensitive data disclosure.
Response considerations
Contain the confirmed channel, preserve transfer evidence, and reconstruct the data collection that preceded the change.
A control path can also carry collected information
An existing command-and-control channel may transport data out of an environment as well as instructions into it. The same connection can therefore support several functions. Investigators should assess direction, volume, timing, process activity, and any available application content rather than assume every message has the same role.
A suspected control channel does not automatically prove that every accessible file was exported. File reads, packaging, and successful transfer need supporting evidence. Encrypted payloads or sampled telemetry may limit the exposure assessment. State those limits rather than fill them with assumptions about what the tool could theoretically do.
A fictional archive sent through an existing session
An academy identifies an unfamiliar process communicating with a confirmed unauthorized destination. Later, the process reads a prepared archive and outbound volume increases. Analysts correlate file and network records, preserve the archive where available, and evaluate whether the sequence supports successful movement of its contents.
Byte counts alone may not match original file sizes because of compression, protocol overhead, retries, or other traffic. The report should explain the measurement and the strength of the linkage. A conclusion about specific information requires more than a general increase in traffic to a concerning endpoint.
Separate control and export evidence
Create fictional events for a remote instruction, file collection, archive creation, and an outbound response. Identify which records support each stage and where the chain remains uncertain. Use harmless prepared logs rather than operating a real control framework or sending private information.
Response needs to address both ongoing communication and the original access. Blocking the channel may stop further movement while leaving persistence, compromised credentials, or collected local archives behind. Coordinate containment, evidence preservation, and exposure assessment so immediate interruption does not become a substitute for understanding the incident's scope.
