Memory forensics
Examine volatile system state that persistent storage may not preserve.
The idea
Memory forensics analyzes captured RAM for evidence such as processes, loaded modules, connections, and other transient state. Acquisition changes a running system, and the capture may represent an imperfect moment rather than a fully consistent snapshot. Interpretation depends on operating-system structures, symbols, and tool support. Protect captures because they can contain credentials and sensitive data. Correlate memory findings with other sources.
In practice
An investigator compares process listings from several memory-analysis views and checks whether an unexpected process aligns with network and endpoint records.
A common misunderstanding
A memory tool’s empty output does not prove absence if symbols, acquisition quality, or platform support are wrong.

What should a memory report document?
Think it through: Acquisition context, tool and symbol versions, relevant artifacts, corroboration, and limitations.
Volatile state can answer a different question
Memory may preserve running processes, loaded modules, connections, and data that is absent from persistent files. It can therefore help explain what a system was doing near the collection time. However, acquisition itself takes time and may alter state. A memory image is not an instantaneous, perfectly consistent photograph of every component.
Collection requires an approved method compatible with the platform and situation. Consider the device's stability, business role, encryption, and the risk of losing evidence through shutdown. There is no universal rule that memory must always be collected before every other action. Coordinate priorities through the incident's authorized decision process and document the reasoning.
A fictional short-lived process
An academy investigates unusual outbound activity from a workstation. A memory capture may reveal a process and connection that disappear before a later disk examination. Analysts compare those observations with endpoint and network records to establish context. They avoid treating a residual string or isolated structure as complete proof of a particular action.
Memory can contain passwords, tokens, personal information, and unrelated content. Protect the image, restrict access, and avoid exposing raw results in a broadly shared report. Tool support and symbol accuracy also affect interpretation; an unsupported plugin or corrupted structure can produce incomplete results.
Plan a training analysis
Choose a permitted sample image and define one question about process or connection state. Record the acquisition context supplied with the sample, the analysis tool, and the output supporting your answer. Add one question the image cannot resolve about earlier events. This keeps the investigation focused on what volatile evidence can support rather than assuming it reveals the full history of the host.
