Parameterized queries and prepared statements
Parameterized queries keep supplied values separate from a command's SQL structure.
What it means
Parameterized queries keep supplied values separate from a command's SQL structure. A database interface binds values through its supported API rather than stitching them into executable text. This helps prevent SQL injection when used consistently, but does not decide whether the caller may access the resulting records.
A practical example
A report endpoint binds a date range and account identifier, then adds an authorization condition for the caller's tenant. The binding protects the query syntax while the additional condition limits which rows can be returned.
What to check
Trace all inputs to query execution, including filters, pagination, and administrative jobs. Verify that the driver truly binds values and inspect places where the code constructs identifiers or whole clauses.
A common pitfall
Query parameterization is not access control. A perfectly parameterized query can still disclose another customer's records if it lacks the correct authorization condition.
Think it through
A query is parameterized but retrieves any supplied tenant ID. What remains wrong?
Answer: The service must verify tenant membership and scope the query to records the caller may access.
A query has a shape and supplied values
Think of a fictional attendance report with a fixed selection of columns, an authorized course identifier, and start and end dates. The database command describes the report's shape. The identifier and dates are supplied through the driver's binding interface. This remains useful when the dates arrive from a trusted internal scheduler, because future callers may use the same function differently.
The application should also decide what a date means before binding it. A parameterized query may correctly execute a report spanning every historical record when the product permits only one month. Binding does not provide sensible ranges, pagination, tenancy, or business authorization. Those checks belong alongside the query rather than being assumed to follow from its construction.
Some inputs select SQL structure instead of values. A user choosing between newest and oldest can be mapped to two known ordering fragments. Do not accept an arbitrary column expression simply because other query inputs are bound. Keep the set of permitted structural choices narrow and defined by the application.
Review a complete data path
For a learning exercise, sketch the attendance request, its validation, the authorization decision, the query template, and the bound parameters. Include a course belonging to a different test account and a date outside the allowed range. Explain which layer rejects each request; the database driver should not be responsible for knowing the application's ownership rules.
During a code review, inspect the final execution call and every branch that reaches it. Search features, exports, maintenance scripts, and fallback error paths may bypass the ordinary abstraction. A concise regression test should demonstrate that ordinary punctuation stays data while an unauthorized course remains inaccessible. Both outcomes are needed for a secure report.
